Vatican City, November 8, 2025:
Pope Leo XIV has urged world leaders attending COP30 in Belém, Brazil, to commit to “courageous and concrete” efforts in caring for creation, highlighting the inseparable link between peace and environmental stewardship.
In a message delivered by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope stated, “If you want to cultivate peace, care for creation.”
He warned that peace is threatened not only by conflicts but also by “a lack of due respect for creation, by the plundering of natural resources, and by a progressive decline in the quality of life because of climate change.”
The Pope emphasised that the ecological crisis is a moral issue, urging nations to share responsibility for promoting both a peaceful and healthy environment.
He reiterated the call made in Laudato Si’ to move from “words and reflections into choices and actions based on responsibility, justice, and equity.”
Pope Leo also appealed for a human-centred international financial architecture that supports vulnerable nations, noting the connection between ecological debt and foreign debt.
Concluding his message, he invited participants to “protect and care for the creation entrusted to us by God in order to build a peaceful world,” assuring them of his prayers for their work.
