Mumbai, November 8, 2025:
Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS) has announced peaceful protests at 25 locations across the city on November 9, opposing the proposed “Freedom of Religion” Bill set to be tabled in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during its winter session at Nagpur.
BCS warned that the proposed law could “criminalise acts of kindness” such as providing food, shelter, education, and healthcare to the poor and marginalised—actions inspired by faith but not intended as conversion attempts.
It cautioned that “these acts of mercy could be misinterpreted as attempts at conversion, opening the door to harassment of minorities.”
The organisation noted that similar legislation in other states has been used to target religious minorities and that the proposed Bill might undermine the spirit of religious freedom and service-driven outreach.
“Maharashtra must rise above divisive politics and uphold the true spirit of religious freedom. Let compassion, not suspicion, guide our laws,” its statement read.
