Pope Leo XIV Calls on Theologians to Bridge Faith And Science

Vatican City, 26 November 2025 — Pope Leo XIV met with members of the International Theological Commission in Rome during their plenary assembly, urging theologians to apply rigorous theological reflection across all human sciences so as to help the Church and humanity face contemporary challenges.

In his address, the Pope thanked the Commission for its work — including a recently released document on the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea — calling it an authoritative text that paves the way for his upcoming apostolic journey to Türkiye.

He encouraged members to discern the “new things” shaping our world and to maintain the “indispensable rigour of theological method” while integrating three key dimensions in their work: the catholicity of faith (drawing on the diverse experiences of local Churches worldwide), interdisciplinary collaboration across theological disciplines, and the spiritual dimension grounded in prayer and lived faith — following the example of great Doctors of the Church.

Pope Leo warned against reducing theology to mere commentary on doctrinal formulas. He insisted that as a “science of faith”, theology must illuminate all fields of human knowledge and contribute to the development of societies by offering moral and spiritual insight in a world confronting social, scientific, and ethical challenges.
