Pope Leo XIV Appoints Peruvian Priest as Personal Secretary

Vatican City, 14 May, 2025- Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr. Edgard Iván Rimaycuna Inga, a young priest from Chiclayo, Peru, as his new personal secretary. The decision underscores the pontiff’s close rapport with Fr. Rimaycuna, who has served in various pastoral and academic roles in recent years.

Fr. Rimaycuna, known for his humility and intellectual depth, has maintained a strong connection with Pope Leo XIV since their early encounters during synodal gatherings in Latin America. The appointment is seen as a reflection of the Pope’s continued emphasis on a more inclusive and globally representative leadership within the Vatican.

Though relatively young, Fr. Rimaycuna has already earned a reputation as a capable administrator and theological scholar. His pastoral work in Peru and engagement in international ecclesial forums have positioned him as a trusted voice among younger clergy.

The role of personal secretary involves close daily collaboration with the Pope, managing correspondence, schedules, and often acting as a key intermediary with Vatican departments and visiting dignitaries. Fr. Rimaycuna replaces Fr. Daniel Pellizzon, who had served in the role since July 18, 2023.

This latest appointment reflects Pope Leo XIV’s ongoing efforts to bring fresh perspectives into the heart of the papal office, with a particular focus on voices from the global South.
