Pope Leo: Grandparents and Elderly Are Witnesses of Hope

Vatican City, 27 July 2025 – Pope Leo XIV marked the Fifth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on Sunday, highlighting the invaluable role older generations play as “witnesses of hope”. Addressing the faithful after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reminded all gathered that this year’s theme is: “Blessed is the one who does not lose hope.”

In his brief reflection, the Pope urged the world not to overlook the elderly but to walk alongside them. “Let us look to grandparents and the elderly as witnesses of hope, capable of lighting the path for new generations. Let us not leave them alone, but join them in a covenant of love and prayer,” he said.

His official Message for the occasion was released earlier this month on 10 July 2025.

Jubilee of Youth

Pope Leo also extended a heartfelt welcome to the many young pilgrims who have arrived in Rome for the Jubilee of Youth, part of the wider Holy Year celebrations.

Following his appeal for peace in nations afflicted by war, the Pope addressed the youth gathered in the Square. “I greet with particular affection the young people from various countries who have gathered in Rome for the Jubilee of Youth,” he said.

He expressed his hopes for their spiritual journey: “I hope that this will be an opportunity for each of you to encounter Christ, and to be strengthened by him in your faith and in your commitment to following Christ with integrity of life.”

The Pope’s remarks tied together the intergenerational theme of the day, emphasising unity, faith, and the enduring strength of hope—regardless of age.
