CBCI Condemns Harassment of Nuns, Urges Immediate Government Action

Delhi, July 27, 2025 – The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly condemned the recent arrest and alleged physical assault of two Catholic Religious Women at Durg Railway Station, describing it as part of a disturbing trend of harassment, false accusations, and fabricated cases targeting nuns across the country.

According to the CBCI, the incident occurred despite the presence of written consent letters from the parents of the girls accompanying the nuns. All the girls are legally adults, above the age of 18. The Conference expressed particular alarm over reports that the nuns were physically assaulted during the incident.

The CBCI has raised concerns that Christian Religious Women are increasingly being tracked by anti-social elements, who then surround them at railway stations, incite crowds, and use abusive language. These actions, the Conference stated, pose a severe threat not only to the dignity and modesty of these women but also to their lives.

Describing these repeated instances of harassment as a “grave violation of the Constitution,” the CBCI has called upon state governments to ensure the safety of all women and take prompt measures to prevent such incidents. Additionally, the Conference has appealed for urgent intervention from the Union Government.

The Catholic Church has affirmed its resolve to raise this issue across all appropriate platforms and to stand firmly against any attempts to violate the dignity of Religious Nuns and Priests, infringe on religious freedom, or spread hostility against minority communities.

Reiterating its commitment to justice and protection of minority rights, the CBCI urged authorities to take concrete steps to uphold the rights and dignity of Religious Women and ensure their security. The organisation has pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and to take all necessary actions to safeguard minority communities in India.
