Pope Leo: God's Kingdom grows through humility, patience and love

Castle Gandolfo, Italy, July 20, 2026: Pope Leo XIV urged Christians to trust in God's quiet work rather than seek dramatic displays of divine power, saying the Kingdom of God grows through humility, patience and love.

Speaking during the Sunday Angelus at Castel Gandolfo, the Pope reflected on three parables from St. Matthew's Gospel—the wheat and the weeds, the mustard seed and the yeast. He said these parables reveal how God works patiently and discreetly in history and in people's lives.

Rather than acting through force or triumph, God chooses "smallness" as the sign of His patient and faithful love, the Pope said. He explained that God's love works quietly, even amid the presence of evil, transforms lives gradually and allows people the freedom to accept or reject Him.

Pope Leo acknowledged that many expect God to eliminate evil immediately through extraordinary intervention. However, he cautioned that such expectations can distort the Christian understanding of both faith and the Church.

Instead, he called on Christians to recognise the good that continues to grow despite darkness, avoid hasty judgements and trust in the steady work of God's grace. Even when God appears absent, He remains present and continues to guide His people, the Pope said.

The Holy Father also encouraged Christians to adopt a Gospel-centred way of life, rejecting arrogance, domination and the misuse of power to impose the faith. Instead, believers should imitate God's humble and patient approach in their personal lives and within the Church.

Quoting Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Leo said Christians are called to embrace "the logic of the seed", choosing humility and service over success and greatness.

He concluded by encouraging the faithful to become "small seeds of the Gospel" and "leavens of love" capable of transforming the world from within.

Entrusting the faithful to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Pope prayed that she, who welcomed the Word of God with humility, would sustain Christians on their journey of faith.
