Mother Scholastica of Kanyakumari Declared 'Servant of God'; Cause for Canonisation Officially Opens

Nagercoil, July 20, 2026: The Catholic Church in India has marked a significant milestone with Mother Scholastica of Kanyakumari being declared a "Servant of God," the first official stage in the Church's process towards sainthood. The Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints has formally recognised her cause, opening the path for her canonisation.

The announcement has been welcomed with joy, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where Mother Scholastica's legacy of prayer and service continues to inspire countless faithful.

According to the Superior General of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the congregation received an official letter from the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints dated January 19, 2026, confirming the recognition of the cause. The development was publicly announced on May 10 at Annunciation Church, Vellore Cathedral.

Born on October 15, 1917, at Pattarivilai near Thingalnagar in Kanyakumari district to Savarimuthu and Savariyayi, Mother Scholastica founded the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus congregation. Throughout her life, she devoted herself to serving the poor, the destitute, persons with disabilities, people affected by leprosy and the elderly. Her ministry was marked by deep prayer, compassion and selfless dedication, leaving a lasting spiritual legacy among those she served.

The cause for her canonisation gained momentum in 2025 under the leadership of Bishop Ambrose Pitchaimuthu of Vellore. Comprehensive documentation on Mother Scholastica's life, virtues and apostolic ministry was prepared and submitted to the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. After being examined by the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council and other ecclesiastical bodies, the cause received the required approval, leading to her official declaration as a Servant of God.

With the diocesan phase completed, the cause will now move to Rome, where historical and theological commissions will examine the documentation. The Church will also investigate testimonies regarding reported miracles attributed to Mother Scholastica as the cause advances through the successive stages of Venerable, Blessed and, ultimately, Saint.

To mark the occasion, a thanksgiving Mass will be celebrated on July 22 at Holy Family Church in Pattarivilai, Mother Scholastica's native village. Bishop Albert Anastas of Kuzhithurai will preside over the Eucharistic celebration, which is expected to be attended by priests, religious and large numbers of the faithful from across the region.
