Pope Leo Calls for Truthful, Free, and Dialogical Journalism as a Path to Peace

Vatican City, Jan 15, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has emphasised the vital role of journalism rooted in truth, freedom, and dialogue, describing such communication as essential to the common good and to peace-building in an increasingly polarised world.

In a message marking the 50th anniversary of the Italian daily La Repubblica, addressed to its editor Mario Orfeo, the Pope reflected on the responsibility of the media in shaping public conscience and fostering social harmony. He acknowledged the newspaper’s five decades of reporting on Italy, global affairs, and the Church, highlighting its tradition of freedom of inquiry and its enduring bond with readers.

Pope Leo noted that journalism inevitably engages with a plurality of opinions, cultures, and viewpoints. However, he stressed that this diversity must always be accompanied by transparency, integrity, and a commitment to truth. Authentic journalism, he said, does not inflame divisions but creates opportunities for dialogue that contribute to the common good.

The Pope underlined that dialogue, when free from hostility and prejudice, has the power to overcome conflict and build peace. Such communication, he observed, strengthens unity within the human family and helps societies navigate tensions with wisdom and responsibility.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo expressed his hope that La Repubblica would continue to promote a form of communication that is free, dialogical, and animated by a sincere search for truth, reaffirming the media’s indispensable role in fostering peace and understanding in the modern world.
