Pope Francis Highlights the Vitality of Indonesia’s Young Jesuits

Jakarta, September 4, 2024: Pope Francis met with members of the Society of Jesus serving in Indonesia on the second day of his Apostolic Journey to the country. The meeting took place at the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta, following his official engagements with Indonesian authorities, civil society, and the diplomatic corps at the presidential palace.

Among those in attendance was Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja, SJ, the 89-year-old Archbishop Emeritus of Jakarta. The Pope held a private discussion with the Jesuits for about an hour, during which he answered several questions.

Fr. Antonio Spadaro, SJ, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, described the meeting as warm and familiar. He noted that Pope Francis appeared very relaxed and at ease, sharing his initial impressions of the visit. The Pope expressed his joy at seeing many young Jesuits in formation in Indonesia, which particularly struck him.

During the conversation, Pope Francis discussed the Society of Jesus, emphasizing the importance of discernment and prayer. He also addressed other significant topics relevant to Indonesia, such as interreligious dialogue and inculturation.

Fr. Spadaro highlighted that the Pope has a deep appreciation for smaller Christian communities, such as those in Indonesia, where Catholics make up a small percentage of the population but still play a significant role. He emphasized that Pope Francis values the vitality and generative capacity of these communities, encouraging them to contribute to the growth of the country.

The Pope is expected to have additional meetings with Jesuits during his journey, including in Timor-Leste and Singapore.
