Vatican City, Jan. 24, 2025: Pope Francis called for the introduction of road safety education in schools and also emphasized the importance of sustainability during a meeting with presidents and directors of the Italian Federation of the Automobile Club at the Vatican on Thursday. During the meeting, the Pope praised the federation’s 120 years of service to Italian citizens and urged them to prioritize road safety and environmental protection for a better future.
Turning first to education, the Holy Father said there is a need for a culture of respect and road safety to be fostered through education in schools.
“We must create a culture of respect and safety on the road, starting from schools,” the Pope stated, underscoring that educating young people about responsible behavior and the risks of negligence can help save lives and foster civil coexistence.
Turning next to the environment, the pontiff highlighted the impact of vehicles, consumption of non-renewable energy, and pollution on the planet. “Quality of life is at stake,” he warned, calling for urgent, collaborative action to promote sustainability.
The Pope invited the Federation to view the Jubilee as a time “to start anew” by renewing their dedication to protecting lives and the environment. "We are not made to remain still," he reminded, "but to aspire to happiness," which, he reassured, is possible when we recognize Jesus, Mary, and the Saints in our midst. He urged members of the delegation to "never be discouraged" but to "always start again."
Pope Francis concluded his address by entrusting the delegates and their families to St. Christopher, the patron saint of motorists, imparting his apostolic blessing, and asking for their prayers.
