New Delhi, December 23, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Christmas celebrations organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India on the evening of December 23 in New Delhi. The event highlighted the spirit of Christmas, celebrating peace, goodwill, and unity.
The programme began with a soulful Bhajan performed by renowned musician Stephen Devasi, creating an atmosphere of devotion and harmony. Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto, Archbishop of Delhi extended a warm welcome to the gathering. A heartwarming Christmas musical presentation by differently abled children left the audience deeply moved, reflecting the inclusive essence of the season.
Archbishop George Antonysamy, Archbishop of Madras Mylapore, honoured Prime Minister Modi with a shawl, while Bishop Joseph Mar Thomas of Sulthan Bathery presented him with a commemorative memento.
In his presidential address, Archbishop Andrews Thazhath spoke about the deeper meaning of Christmas. "This season reminds us to build bridges of understanding and compassion. The birth of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, calls us to live in love and harmony. Mr. Prime Minister, your vision for a united India resonates with these values of inclusion and service," he said.
The archbishop also voiced concerns about challenges faced by some members of the Christian community. "While we celebrate the joy of Christmas, we cannot ignore the difficulties faced by a few in parts of our country. Honourable Prime Minister, we humbly seek your attention to incidents of violence and discrimination against Christians. These acts not only harm individuals but also threaten the social fabric of our nation," he remarked.
Prime Minister Modi, in his address, emphasized the universal values of Christmas. "The teachings of Lord Christ inspire love, harmony, and brotherhood. We must strengthen these values in our society. It deeply pains me to see attempts to spread violence and disrupt peace. It is our collective duty to fight such challenges and work towards unity," he said.
