Archbishop of Bengaluru Calls for 'Five Gifts' to Christians from Prime Minister Modi

Bangalore, December 24, 2024: Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant "five gifts" to the Christian community in India, seeking measures that would improve their social and legal standing. In a statement issued on December 23, the Archbishop called for an end to the covert harassment of Christians, particularly through the controversial anti-conversion bills being introduced across 12 states. He urged Modi to intervene and ensure that states adopt a more inclusive attitude, allowing for true religious freedom.

The Archbishop expressed deep concern over the spread of anti-conversion laws, which he described as both "hurtful and disturbing," especially as they continue to affect the Christian community despite Christianity's long presence in India. "Why should the Christians in India be considered 'foreigners,' discriminated against and persecuted, even after 2000 years of Christianity in India?" he asked. These laws, which have been enacted under the guise of "Freedom of Religion" bills, have led to discrimination and human rights violations, according to Archbishop Machado. He emphasized that existing laws are sufficient to address fraudulent conversions and that the new legislation unfairly targets the Christian community.

In addition to the anti-conversion bills, the Archbishop also called for the resolution of the ongoing violence in Manipur, where Christians have been disproportionately affected by the civil unrest. He lamented that the Prime Minister had yet to visit the region despite his reputation for mediating peace in conflict zones globally. Further, Archbishop Machado requested an end to the increasing attacks on Christians and their institutions, citing 767 reported incidents in 2024 alone.

Another key request from the Archbishop was for constitutional recognition of Christians from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, stressing that these citizens deserve the same rights and privileges guaranteed to all Indian citizens under the constitution. He also urged the Prime Minister to take steps toward making Pope Francis's anticipated visit to India in 2025 a reality, following an invitation extended earlier.

The Archbishop's statement comes as the Christian community in India prepares to celebrate Christmas, amidst rising concerns over their safety and religious freedoms.
