Jhajha, Jamui (Bihar), 16 Feb 2026: A nun serving at St. Joseph’s School in Jhajha, under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur was mocked and humiliated by a group of Class 10 students during a school picnic last year. The incident has come to light after a video of the episode surfaced recently.
According to a nun from the same congregation who spoke to Catholic Connect, the incident occurred in 2025 when students had gone for a school picnic. As the outing concluded, the sister — a staff member of the institution — was requesting the students to return to the bus.
“The students were at a picnic, and sister had taken them. When it was time to return, she was asking them to get back into the bus. It was in that context that some of them began making comments,” the sister said.
The video that later surfaced shows a few boys laughing, mocking her, and making disrespectful remarks. Among the comments, the nun was compared to “Mia Khalifa,” an adult film actress, and called by that name in a derisive manner. The footage indicates that the remarks were not isolated but accompanied by laughter and gestures that appeared intended to ridicule her.
At the time of the incident, however, the sister reportedly did not understand the meaning or implication of what was being said.
“She is a Keralite and did not understand what they were telling. We are not used to watching movies or following such personalities. For her, it was just some prank the children were playing,” the sister explained, clarifying that the incident took place last year.
It was only later, after the video circulated and the meaning of the comments was brought to her attention, that she realised the nature of the humiliation. The realisation left her deeply upset.
The school is a diocesan-run institution and is not directly administered by the congregation to which the nun belongs. Reflecting on the episode, the sister raised concerns about the vulnerability of teachers.
“We are committed to bringing education and helping students grow. There are laws to protect students, but what about the teachers? What about their dignity?” she asked.
The congregation expressed hope that the diocesan authorities will take prompt and appropriate action against those responsible and reinforce the importance of respect and accountability within educational institutions.
