Novena to St. Vincent de Paul: A Journey from Compassion to Service

Have you ever noticed someone struggling and wanted to help, but then wondered whether you could really make a difference? Maybe you have had that thought about your own life too — I have enough problems of my own. What can I possibly do for someone else?

St. Vincent de Paul could have asked the same question.

Born in France in 1581, Vincent became a priest while still young. His life, however, gradually took a different direction from what he had first imagined. Encounters with people living in poverty opened his eyes to suffering that could not simply be ignored.

One experience in particular changed him. After witnessing the spiritual and material needs of poor people in rural France, Vincent began to understand that preaching about faith also meant responding to people who were hurting. His concern became action. He organised practical help for those in need and inspired others to join him.

He did not try to solve every problem in the world. He responded to the people God placed in front of him.

That can be harder than it sounds.

We can become so occupied with our own worries that we stop noticing the person who needs a little patience, the family member who needs support, the neighbour who is struggling or even the quiet prompting in our own hearts to do something differently.

St. Vincent’s story asks us a simple question: What are we doing with the needs we see?

And perhaps that question applies to what we carry as well.

Maybe you are praying for a family member. Maybe you are looking for direction, struggling with a personal concern or simply longing to become more generous and attentive to others. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin.

You can begin with prayer.

From September 18 to 26, the Novena to St Vincent de Paul offers nine days to bring those intentions before God through his intercession. But instead of treating it as simply another prayer to finish, let these nine days become a chance to stop, listen and ask where God might be leading you.

St Vincent discovered his calling by responding to what was in front of him. Perhaps your own nine-day journey can begin with the same openness.
