Novena to St. Euphrasia Eluvathingal: Learning to Trust God in the Quiet

August 21, 2026: Not every prayer is answered with a dramatic sign. Sometimes, faith grows quietly — through a difficult day, an unanswered question, a family concern or the strength to keep going when no one else sees the struggle. St. Euphrasia Eluvathingal, known as the "Praying Mother," offers a beautiful example of this quiet, persevering faith.

Born Rosa Eluvathingal in Kerala in 1877, St. Euphrasia grew up with a deep love for prayer and a strong desire to give herself to God. She eventually entered the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel and took the religious name Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her life was marked by prayer, humility, devotion to the Eucharist and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, as well as service to others.

Yet what makes her especially relatable is that holiness did not mean a life without struggle. She experienced illness and other trials, but continued to place herself in God’s hands. Her deep interior life became so evident that people who knew her came to call her the “Praying Mother”.

Bring Your Heart to Her Novena

A novena to St. Euphrasia can be a simple invitation to slow down, pray honestly and entrust what weighs most heavily on your heart to God through her intercession.

Perhaps you are praying for healing, carrying anxiety about your family, seeking direction in an important decision, struggling to remain faithful in prayer, or simply longing for greater peace. Whatever you bring, the novena can become nine days of placing your concerns before God and learning from St. Euphrasia’s quiet trust.

Her life reminds us that prayer is not only about asking God to change our circumstances. It is also about allowing God to change us — giving us patience when answers take time, courage when life becomes difficult and peace when we cannot see what lies ahead.

Canonised by Pope Francis in 2014, St. Euphrasia remains a powerful witness to a life centred on God.

As you begin this novena, bring one particular intention to prayer each day. Speak to God honestly. Ask St. Euphrasia to intercede for you. And, like the “Praying Mother”, learn to remain close to God even in the quiet.
