Guwahati, May 9, 2026: In a vibrant expression of faith and solidarity, women leaders from across North East India gathered in Guwahati on May 8 for the fourth regional conference of the Commission for Women. Centred on the theme “Empowered Women in Faith, Service and Unity,” the meeting sought to deepen the spiritual and social commitment of women in the life of the Church.
The conference commenced with a reflective session of prayer and meditation led by the Women’s Commission of Agartala, setting a contemplative tone for the day. This was followed by the Holy Mass themed “Women, Called to be Missionary Disciples,” presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Panipitchai of Miao, Chairman of the North East Commission for Women.
Speaking on the theme of women as missionary disciples, Bishop Dennis Panipitchai of Miao reflected on the many ways women proclaim the Gospel through daily life and witness. He highlighted “silent witness,” “life of service,” “life of prayer,” “praying for others,” “life of suffering and martyrdom,” “life of belief,” and “life of holiness” as paths through which women become missionary disciples in society and the Church. Encouraging the participants to deepen their relationship with Christ, he said, “Be with him, if you love him, make space and time for him. And you become the true disciples.”
In his inaugural address, Bishop Panipitchai formally declared the conference open and delivered a keynote message urging participants to embrace their vocation with renewed zeal. Emphasising the importance of faith-rooted leadership, he called on women to become dynamic agents of missionary discipleship within their communities.
A symbolic highlight of the gathering was the ceremonial placement of flags by representatives from 15 diocesan Women’s Commissions, representing unity and shared purpose among women across the region.
The conference featured a series of insightful presentations. Sr. Lidwin Fernandes, National Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Women, reflected on the joy of serving the Lord with dedication and humility. Sr. Sunanda SND presented a comprehensive report outlining the various initiatives and activities undertaken by women in the North East over the past year.
Addressing the gathering, Fr. Mathew Anchukandam, Vicar General, underscored the transformative role of education in empowering women within the family and society. Fr. Anil, Director of the North Eastern Diocesan Social Service Society (NEDSSS), spoke on the broader vision of the conference, inviting participants to remain rooted in Christ while responding to contemporary challenges.
Bringing together voices from diverse dioceses, the conference provided a platform for sharing experiences, strengthening collaboration and renewing commitment to the mission of the Church. Participants departed with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired to foster faith, service and unity in their respective communities.
