NESCOM Begins Bridging Digital Divide for Church in Northeast India

Guwahati, 9 March 2025: Taking a significant step towards digital inclusion, the Northeast Social Communication (NESCOM) Commission—the communication arm of the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC)—officially launched the website of the Diocese of Itanagar (www.dioceseofitanagar.com) on 9 April. The project is part of NESCOM’s broader initiative to bridge the digital gap among the region’s 15 dioceses, including three archdioceses, many of which lack functioning or up-to-date websites.

NESCOM Chairman Bishop Albert Hemrom and newly appointed Secretary Fr. Kampan Chinnam led the initiative despite limited staff and funding. Through prayer and perseverance, the team secured support from Franciscan Solutions, an education technology company known for its charitable motto: “For it is in giving we receive.” Recognising the importance of the mission, the company agreed to design and host the diocesan website free of charge—offering a vital boost to the project.

The partnership was initiated during a bishops’ meeting in Bongaigaon in early March, where Mr. Sumit Dass, Head of Operations at Franciscan Solutions, met Church leaders. The Diocese of Itanagar became the first to embrace the offer, prioritising a stronger digital presence to enhance outreach and communication.

After nearly a month of development, the website was launched during a ceremony attended by over 100 priests, religious, and lay leaders. Most Rev. Benny Varghese Edathattel, Bishop of Itanagar, led the inauguration alongside Bishop Emeritus Most Rev. Dr. John Thomas Kattrukudiyil and Most Rev. Gabriel Kujur.

Speaking at the event, Bishop Benny described the collaboration as an answer to prayer. “When costs became overwhelming, the Lord opened a new way,” he said, referring to high quotes previously received from other service providers.

Mr. Das also presented Franciscan Solutions’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools for educational institutions, which are available on a paid basis. These systems aim to streamline school administration and support Catholic education across the region.

Located in Arunachal Pradesh, the Diocese of Itanagar was established in 2005 and remains one of the youngest in Northeast India. With over 50 parishes and several mission centres, it continues to grow under the leadership of Bishop Edathattel, its second bishop.

NESCOM, also founded in 2005, serves as a platform for Church communication across the seven culturally rich and geographically remote northeastern states. With this first digital milestone achieved, NESCOM aims to support other dioceses in developing their own online platforms—advancing connectivity and unity across the region.

This launch signals a promising step forward for the Church’s communication ministry, as Northeast India embraces digital tools to strengthen its mission.
