Gwalior Diocese Holds Seminar to Deepen Understanding of Liturgy

Gwalior, September 16, 2026: The Gwalior Diocese organised a seminar on the meaning and significance of liturgy for members of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) on September 14 at the Infant Jesus Multipurpose Centre in Dabra.

The seminar, titled “The Significance of Liturgy,” focused on helping clergy and religious deepen their understanding of liturgical celebrations and their role in the life and mission of the Church.

Fr Johnson B. Mariya served as the main resource person and led the sessions, explaining the meaning, importance and proper celebration of the liturgy.

The programme was organised under the guidance of Fr Lourdu Nathan, Director of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. Fr Nelson and Fr M. A. Joseph, who are responsible for CRI activities in the diocese, also participated.

In his inaugural address, Fr Nelson stressed the importance of meaningful liturgical celebrations in strengthening the life of the Church. He said a beautiful and meaningful celebration of the liturgy “brings beauty and vitality to the Church.”

Fr M. A. Joseph highlighted the contribution of religious sisters to parish liturgies, particularly in preparing and coordinating liturgical celebrations.

The seminar also addressed the role of media in the Church’s evangelising mission. Fr Sanu Alunkal, Director of Media and Communication of the Gwalior Diocese, spoke on the use of media for evangelisation and encouraged the participants to make effective use of contemporary media platforms to proclaim the Gospel.

Bishop Joseph Thykkattil of Gwalior presided over the Eucharistic celebration as the main celebrant. In his homily, delivered on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he reflected on the meaning and significance of the Holy Cross.

The bishop also expressed his appreciation for the dedicated service of religious sisters to the Church and the diocese.

The seminar brought together clergy and religious for reflection and formation, with particular emphasis on deepening their understanding of liturgy and strengthening its role in the Church’s worship and mission.
