National Youth Leader Aims to Build a Visionary Church

Bangalore, 4 February 2024: Ms. Supriya Varghese, the newly elected General Secretary of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), is embarking on a mission to construct a forward-thinking Church in India, dedicated to nurturing the dreams of all individuals.


“My vision is to elevate the CCBI Youth Commission by fostering a dynamic and resilient ICYM through collaborative efforts and unwavering support. Empowering our youth necessitates offering them guidance, inspiration, and avenues for their holistic development,” Ms. Supriya shared with Catholic Connect.


As the national young leader, Supriya endeavours to extend the reach of ICYM to marginalized communities, the unemployed, and disengaged youth, ensuring inclusivity and leaving no one behind.


Ms. Supriya elected as the General Secretary of ICYM during the National Council convened from 22-24 January 2024 at Suchetana, Kathgodam in Uttarakhand. She is a parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral in the Diocese of Shimoga, Karnataka, holds an MSc in Psychology and currently serves as a lecturer at Sahyadri Arts College in Shivamogga.


Over the past five years, she has been actively engaged in ICYM activities, serving as the ICYM Parish Youth President from 2022 to 2023, the Shimoga Diocesan Youth President from 2023 to 2024, and the Karnataka ICYM Office Bearer from 2024 to 2026.


The National Council also elected Mr. Raj Bag from West Bengal-Sikkim as the President of ICYM, Mr. Nelson Macwan from Western as Treasurer, Mr. Snel Ekka from Jharkhand as Media Secretary, Ms. Anusha from Telugu as Liturgy Secretary, Mr. Biraj from Odisha as Joint Secretary, Ms. Niharika from Madhya Pradesh as Vice President, alongside 15 other distinguished executive committee members.
