Mumbai Man Dressed as Santa Brings Christmas Cheer to Hospitalised Children

Mumbai, December 26: This Christmas, Balram Vishwakarma did more than don a Santa Claus costume. He carried forward a deeply personal memory rooted in gratitude, kindness and family tradition.

Growing up in Jogeshwari, Vishwakarma watched his father distribute cakes every December. The gesture was a quiet expression of thanks for the business Christmas brought to their small workshop. That simple ritual left a lasting imprint on him.

Years later, even after his father’s death and the closure of the family workshop, Vishwakarma chose not to let the tradition fade. Instead, he adapted it to his circumstances, ensuring the spirit behind it continued.

Today, his gifts no longer reach neighbourhood children or customers. They reach hospital beds.

In 2023, Vishwakarma walked into Cooper Hospital in Mumbai dressed as Santa, arms filled with soft toys. He met children admitted to paediatric wards—children who could not step out to celebrate Christmas themselves. Vishwakarma brought Christmas to them.

Moving from bed to bed, he handed out toys and smiles, turning a hospital ward into a space of warmth and joy, even if only for a while.

Those familiar with his work say he does not seek applause or recognition. His purpose is simple: to brighten a child’s day. For Vishwakarma, the true meaning of Christmas has always been the same—happy children and the determination to keep kindness moving forward.

Every year, his quiet act of generosity transforms pain and waiting into moments of celebration, reminding families and hospital staff alike that compassion can exist even in the most difficult places.

Through a Santa costume and a bag of toys, Balram Vishwakarma continues a legacy shaped by memory, gratitude and an enduring belief in small acts of goodness.
