Mangalore Diocese Celebrates Catechism Day and Jubilee of Catechists

MANGALORE, 3 March 2025: The Diocese of Mangalore joyfully celebrated Diocesan Catechism Day at Immaculate Conception Church, Urwa, on 2 March 2025. This year’s event was also observed as the Jubilee of Catechists, in alignment with the Year of Jubilee, recognising the dedicated service of catechists in faith formation.

The celebration took place in the presence of several dignitaries, including Msgr. Maxim L. Noronha, Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore, and Msgr. Leslie Shenoy, Parish Priest of Urwa Church. Rev. Fr. Vijay Machado, Director of Mangala Jyothi and Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Faith Formation, and Rev. Dr. Vincent Sequeira, Assistant Director of Mangala Jyothi and Secretary of the Bible Commission, also attended.

Faith Formation: A Lifelong Journey

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Msgr. Maxim L. Noronha. In his homily, he emphasised that faith formation is a continuous journey that must be nurtured in families, parishes, and communities.

“This year, we have been reflecting on the theme, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ We are called to share the light of faith through our words, deeds, and life examples,” he said. He encouraged catechists to remain committed despite challenges, ensuring faith is not only taught but lived.

Inspiring Testimonies and Honours

Students shared their experiences of faith formation. Melora Vanisha Brags from NSM English Medium School, Omzoor, spoke about how catechism strengthened her bond with God. Christan Deekshith Thoras from Bethany English Medium School, Darbe, Puttur, shared how faith learning influenced his life.

Catechist Mercine Crasta, Coordinator of Bendur, reflected on the joys and challenges of teaching young minds. She highlighted that despite distractions, today's youth have a deep spiritual hunger.

At the felicitation programme in Urwa Church Centenary Hall, Jubilee Catechists were honoured for their dedicated service to faith education. Fr. Benjamin and Mr. Nigel Fernandes, CEO of ATC Publishers, awarded essay competition winners. Msgr. Maxim L. Noronha and Mr. George Pinto, Retired Deputy Commissioner, felicitated 66 students who excelled in the diocesan-level Catechism Exam.

Strengthening Catechetical Education

During the event, Msgr. Maxim L. Noronha released the book Way of the Cross and Word of God Reflection, offering valuable resources for faith education.

The celebration reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to catechetical formation, inspiring catechists and students to deepen their faith and continue their lifelong mission of evangelisation.
