Karwar, June 22, 2026: A two-day formation programme for newly appointed Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) concluded at the diocesan Pastoral Centre in Karwar on June 21, equipping participants with a deeper understanding of their ministry and renewing their commitment to Eucharistic service.
Organised by the diocesan Liturgical Commission under the leadership of Fr. Cyprian Silva, the training seminar brought together 36 participants from parishes across the Diocese of Karwar. The initiative aimed to strengthen both the spiritual and pastoral formation of those entrusted with assisting in the distribution of Holy Communion.
Throughout the programme, participants engaged in a series of sessions covering key aspects of the ministry, including Canon Law provisions relating to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, relevant Church documents, the Theology of the Eucharist, and the importance of prayer and Sacred Scripture in the life of an EMHC. The sessions also explored the expectations of the Church and parish clergy regarding the ministry and its faithful exercise.
The seminar provided opportunities for personal spiritual renewal as well. Participants celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation, preparing themselves more deeply for their role as ministers serving the Eucharistic community.
The highlight of the programme was the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Duming Dias of Karwar. Reflecting on the Eucharist as the sacrament of sacrifice, forgiveness and unity, the bishop encouraged the participants to cultivate the mind and heart of Christ in their daily lives and ministry.
In his homily, Bishop Dias urged the new ministers to carry out their responsibilities with reverence, humility and fidelity, always working in communion with their parish priests and in accordance with the norms of the diocese.
At the conclusion of the seminar, Fr. Cyprian Silva, Director of the diocesan Liturgical Commission, expressed gratitude to Bishop Dias for his support, encouragement and pastoral guidance. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the resource persons and thanked the staff of the diocesan Pastoral Centre and all those who worked behind the scenes to ensure the successful conduct of the programme.
The formation seminar marked an important step in preparing a new group of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, fostering greater spiritual maturity, pastoral sensitivity and a deeper appreciation of their responsibility in the Church’s Eucharistic life.
