Jaipur Diocese Strengthens Liturgical Formation of Altar Servers

Jaipur, April 21, 2026: In a bid to foster deeper liturgical awareness and discipline among young ministers, the Jaipur Diocese organised a structured formation programme for altar servers at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Malviya Nagar on April 19.

The training session, attended by 21 altar servers, was led by Fr. Vinod Kujur, Vice Rector of Maria Sadan Seminary, alongside Fr. Melwin D’Souza, Parish Priest. The initiative aimed to deepen the servers’ understanding of their sacred role in assisting during the Holy Mass.

The programme began with a theological grounding on the vocation of altar serving, emphasising reverence, attentiveness, and responsibility in service at the altar. Participants were guided through the meaning and proper use of liturgical vessels, including the chalice, paten, ciborium, thurible, and cruets, with detailed explanations highlighting their significance in the Eucharistic celebration.

A strong practical component formed the core of the session. The servers were trained step-by-step in their duties—from preparation in the sacristy and prayerful readiness to assisting the priest with vestments, preparing the altar, and participating in the entrance procession. The correct sequence of roles in the procession was clearly reinforced, ensuring uniformity and order during liturgical celebrations.

Special attention was given to key ritual actions, including the ringing of the bell according to the “3 × 3 rule” during the elevation, symbolising honour to the Holy Trinity. The proper use of incense by the thurifer and the coordinated presentation of wine and water were also demonstrated, with an emphasis on precision and reverence.

The session underscored the importance of posture, silence, and discipline at the altar. Servers were instructed to maintain decorum, avoid distractions, and remain attentive throughout the celebration. Guidelines such as arriving early, observing silence in the sacristy, and handling sacred objects with care were firmly reiterated.

Organisers noted that the programme helped address common mistakes, clarified roles, and set a higher standard of liturgical discipline, equipping altar servers to participate more meaningfully in the Church’s worship.
