Jaipur Diocese Celebrates Nurses as “Healing Hands of Christ”

Jaipur, May 17, 2026: In an atmosphere filled with prayer, gratitude and celebration, nurses from across Roman Catholic Diocese of Jaipur gathered at the Pastoral Centre in Ghatgate on May 16 to celebrate International Nurses Day, reaffirming their vocation as compassionate caregivers and witnesses to Christ’s healing ministry.

Organised by the Jaipur Nurses Ministry, the event drew enthusiastic participation from nurses belonging to different parishes of the diocese, along with representatives from Nagpur and Dausa. The day highlighted the invaluable contribution of nurses to society and the Church, especially in caring for the sick, elderly and vulnerable.

As part of the celebrations, the ministry had conducted a variety of competitions in the preceding weeks, including poster-making, prayer card-making, essay writing and Bible quiz contests. The activities were inspired by healing parables from the Gospels and encouraged participants to reflect creatively on the Christian understanding of service and compassion.

The programme began with the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Joseph Kallarackal, joined by Spiritual Directors Father Moorthilal and Father Kishore Kumar. In his homily, Bishop Kallarackal praised nurses for their silent sacrifices and dedication, describing nursing as a sacred vocation that continues the healing work of Jesus in today’s world.

A moving moment during the celebration was the felicitation of 54 retired nurses from different parts of the diocese. Bishop Kallarackal honoured them for their decades of committed service, acknowledging their contribution to healthcare and society.

The gathering also featured a keynote session by Liz Abraham, who addressed the realities and challenges faced by nurses in the profession. Stressing the values of compassion, dignity and commitment, she encouraged nurses to uphold human values in healthcare despite growing pressures and demands.

A video presentation showcasing the activities and outreach initiatives of the Jaipur Nurses Ministry added vibrancy to the event. Winners of the various competitions were felicitated during a prize distribution ceremony, while guests and spiritual leaders were presented with tokens of appreciation. All nurses attending the programme received mementoes commemorating the special occasion.

The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks expressing appreciation to Church leaders, organisers and volunteers whose efforts made the programme a meaningful tribute to the nursing community.
