How the Word of God Changed the Life of a Young Man in Meghalaya

Meghalaya, October 30, 2026: In Thadmusem village under Ummulong Parish in the Diocese of Jowai, the journey of Deibormi Suting stands as a witness to how Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) and regular Gospel sharing can shape a person’s faith, abilities and service to the Church.

Basic Ecclesial Communities were introduced in the village around eight to nine years ago, bringing families together to grow personally and communally through devotion to the Word of God. Through these regular gatherings, the faithful found opportunities to listen to the Gospel, reflect on its message and share their personal inspirations.

Among those influenced by this practice was Deibormi Suting, son of Mr. Lowis Nongrum and Mrs. Hilaria Suting, who hails from Thadmusem village.

A Passion for the Word of God

Deibormi did not have the opportunity to receive formal education. However, from his teenage years, he was drawn to the BEC Gospel-sharing sessions regularly held in his village.

He would sit and listen reverently as the Gospel was read and individuals shared their personal inspirations. Through these gatherings, he gradually discovered a deep passion for the Word of God.

His growing interest in Scripture encouraged him to teach himself to write and improve his reading skills. What began as attentive listening soon developed into active participation, as he started reading the Gospel and sharing his reflections during BEC sessions.

His commitment and participation did not go unnoticed. Recognising his leadership qualities, the community selected him as the BEC Coordinator.

From BEC Coordinator to Head Catechist

Deibormi’s piety and devotion to the Word of God eventually led him to become the head catechist of Ummulong Parish.

His journey has not been without challenges. He has faced significant internal and external obstacles while advancing the BEC mission. Yet, through steadfast prayer, patience and joyful service, he has continued to dedicate himself to the community.

His life reflects the role of Basic Ecclesial Communities in nurturing faith and encouraging people to participate actively in the life and mission of the Church.

A Life Shaped by Faith and Service

From listening quietly during Gospel-sharing sessions as a teenager to taking up leadership responsibilities in his community and parish, Deibormi’s journey demonstrates how engagement with the Word of God can inspire personal growth and service.

Through the BECs of Thadmusem, he discovered not only a passion for Scripture but also the confidence to develop his abilities and serve the faithful. Today, as head catechist of Ummulong Parish, he continues to stand as a dedicated member of the community, guiding others through his commitment to the BEC mission.

His story is a reminder of how Basic Ecclesial Communities can help nurture faith, develop lay leadership and encourage the faithful to become active participants in the life of the Church.
