Panaji, October 10, 2026: The Council for Social Justice and Peace of the Archdiocese of Goa has condemned the restrictions imposed on a youth-led peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on October 10, demanding accountability over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
In a statement, the Council criticised the heavy deployment of security personnel, saying it had created a “war-like situation” and spread fear among peaceful citizens.
The Council also objected to transit restrictions and preventive detentions imposed on protesters, describing the measures as an infringement of fundamental rights and democratic freedoms.
Call to protect democratic rights
“Freedom of speech, expression, and peaceful assembly are sacred rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India,” the statement said. It warned that preventing young people from assembling peacefully silenced the nation’s moral conscience.
The Council stressed that governments and public institutions must remain accountable to the people they serve. It urged state and national authorities to lift blanket restrictions and respect the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
Emphasising the importance of democratic governance, the Council called for open dialogue and the protection of civil liberties rather than measures that restrict peaceful dissent.
The statement concluded by expressing solidarity with those seeking transparency and accountability and calling for wisdom, restraint and justice in addressing their concerns.
The statement was signed by Fr. Savio Fernandes, Executive Secretary of the Council for Social Justice and Peace.
