Father Sandesh Manuel is a Franciscan priest from Bangalore, India, who has embraced a modern approach to ministry that resonates with today's youth. With a background in music and a passion for creativity, he utilizes social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube to connect with younger audiences. In a recent conversation with Catholic Connect, he aims to make spiritual messages more relatable and accessible.
Can you introduce yourself to our readers and share what inspires you to live out your vocation as an unconventional Franciscan priest?
Hi, I’m Father Sandesh Manuel. Growing up in a devout Christian family, I attended Merrimackle School and St. Joseph's Indian High School, followed by Christ College for my pre-university education. Initially aspiring to be a doctor, I found myself questioning life's deeper meanings, such as the purpose of suffering and existence itself. This philosophical curiosity led me to the Franciscans, whom I admired for their approachable nature. After joining the order 26 years ago, I was ordained in 2009. Currently, I live in Austria, studying music and engaging with a community increasingly disconnected from traditional faith practices. My inspiration comes from the teachings of Jesus and St. Francis of Assisi, emphasizing simplicity and humility.
You've spoken about wanting to 'wake up the Church.' What do you believe is the most significant change needed in how the Church engages with people today?
The Church must awaken from its complacency and engage actively with those searching for meaning. In Europe, particularly in German-speaking countries, church attendance is declining as many seek purpose outside traditional practices. We need to step out of our comfortable circles and recognize the struggles people face today. It’s essential to adapt our message to resonate with contemporary society while remaining true to our core values. St. Francis was a radical thinker who adapted his message to meet his time's needs; we must follow his example by presenting our message in accessible ways.
Many priests are seen as traditional figures, yet you embrace a modern, creative approach. How has your Instagram presence reshaped the image of a priest in the eyes of young people?
My creative use of platforms like Instagram and YouTube allows me to connect with young people who may not resonate with traditional church practices. By incorporating contemporary music styles—like rap and jazz into my ministry, I aim to communicate spiritual messages that appeal to youth culture. I started using these platforms early on; back in 2007, I was one of Bangalore's first YouTubers. Today, I create content that addresses various audiences—those who love the Church and those who have doubts about it.
You've mentioned wanting to be a 'sensefluencer.' Can you elaborate on what that term means to you?
Being a 'sensefluencer' means influencing others towards spirituality and meaningful living rather than promoting superficial content. In a world where many influencers focus on commercial gains, my aim is different. I want to guide people toward understanding the spirituality of Jesus Christ and St. Francis through my music and social media presence.
Your music ranges from rap to jazz and seems to connect with people on a deep level. How do you view music as a spiritual tool?
Music is a powerful spiritual tool that conveys deep emotions and messages often better than words alone can express. Through my diverse musical offerings, I hope listeners find joy and inspiration while reflecting on their lives. My goal is for my music to serve as both entertainment and a catalyst for spiritual growth.
What’s been the most rewarding aspect of sharing your faith through your diverse YouTube videos?
The most rewarding aspect has been witnessing the positive impact my videos have on viewers’ lives. Knowing that my work brings light into someone’s life is incredibly fulfilling and reinforces my sense of purpose.
Have you faced challenges or criticism from within the Church for your active social media presence?
Yes, I've faced criticism for my unconventional methods; some see them as too modern or lacking reverence for tradition. However, I've learned that criticism is part of any creative endeavor. My focus remains on reaching those who feel disconnected from traditional practices.
What advice would you give young people struggling to reconcile their faith with modern life complexities?
Instead of offering prescriptive advice, I prefer sharing personal experiences for young people to draw inspiration from real-life examples. Everyone's journey is unique; we all grapple with doubts at times—and that's perfectly normal! It's essential to explore spirituality authentically while being kind to oneself and others along this shared journey called life.
