Fr. Denis Joseph: The Powerlifting Priest Who’s Winning Medals and Hearts

When you think of a Catholic priest, images of solemn sermons and quiet prayers likely come to mind. But Fr. Denis Joseph, based in the diocese of Poona, is redefining expectations—one powerlift at a time. The 48-year-old assistant parish priest at Saint Ignatius Church, Khadki, Pune and principal of Saint Joseph Boys High School, Pune isn’t just spreading the Gospel; he’s also lifting massive weights on the international stage.

In February 2025, Fr. Denis proved that faith and fitness go hand in hand when he clinched three medals at the Open Asia Powerlifting Championship, held in Surat. Competing in the 82-90 kg category, he secured silver in the deadlift and squat events and bronze in the push-pull category. With an impressive 140 kg lift in both the deadlift and squat and a 280 kg combined total in push-pull, Fr. Denis stood proudly alongside top athletes from across Asia.

His journey into powerlifting began just a year and a half ago, sparked by a deep desire to evangelise young people through health and fitness. Training under the expert guidance of Coach Gopi, he has dedicated himself to an intense regimen, balancing his pastoral responsibilities with hours of rigorous workouts.

Faith as His Strength

For Fr. Denis, powerlifting isn’t just about physical endurance—it’s about spiritual strength. "I always wear a rosary around my neck when I lift," he shares. "It provides me with spiritual strength and the protection of Mama Mary." His commitment to fitness has made a profound impact on his students, especially as Saint Joseph Boys High School embraces the theme “Health is Divine” for the academic year. His victories have not only brought pride to his parish and school but have also inspired a new generation to take their health seriously.

The Road to International Glory

Fr. Denis isn’t stopping anytime soon. He has been selected to represent India at the 11th International Games 2025 in Dubai, set to take place from April 22 to April 28. Additionally, his stellar performance at the WRPF National Powerlifting Championship in Pune (December 2024) secured him a place at the WRPF Asian Powerlifting Championship. Fr. Denis will be competing in the Thailand leg of the Championship, due to be held in May 2025.

“It’s not easy,” he admits, reflecting on his intense preparations for the event. “I have to work hard, but it’s worth it.”

Lifting More Than Just Weights

More than medals and championships, Fr. Denis sees powerlifting as a tool for evangelization—a way to connect with youth, break stereotypes, and prove that faith and modern aspirations can go hand in hand. His story is a testament to discipline, devotion, and determination, showing the world that strength is both a matter of muscle and spirit.

With his eyes set on upcoming competitions and his heart rooted in faith, Fr. Denis Joseph is proving that a priest can preach from the pulpit—and the podium.
