Formation Programme Organised for the Youth of Two Deaneries of Mysore Diocese

SOMWARPET, Karnataka, Sept. 4, 2025 — Hundreds of youth from the Madikeri and Virajpet deaneries of the Mysore Diocese gathered at Our Lady of Victories Church in Somwarpet, about 115 km from Mysuru, on Wednesday for a Youth Deanery Get-Together organised by the Diocesan Youth Commission. Held under the theme “Fellowship, Formation and Fun”, the event aimed to strengthen faith, foster unity, and encourage young people to live out the Jubilee call to be “Pilgrims of Hope, Journeying Together”. The event formed part of the Jubilee 2025 celebrations in the Diocese of Mysore.

The programme began with a prayer service and welcome ceremony led by the Somwarpet parish youth, followed by the official inauguration by Fr. George Deepak, Dean of Madikeri Deanery, and Fr. James Dominic, Dean of Virajpet Deanery. In their inaugural address, Fr. George and Fr. James urged the participants to embrace the Jubilee spirit with enthusiasm and commitment.

Delivering the keynote address, Msgr. Alfred John Mendonca, Vicar General of Mysore Diocese and Chief Coordinator of Diocesan Commissions, exhorted the youth to root their lives in Christ, uphold family values, and protect creation with the call: “Go Green, Go Clean.”

Fr. Maria Xavier, Secretary of the Diocesan Youth Commission, led the first session of the programme. He addressed the challenges youth face in the modern world and encouraged participants to remain steadfast in faith and service. Fr. Abhilash conducted an orientation session, motivating participants to use their talents and leadership skills to contribute to the growth of the Church and society.

Sr. Monic Shanthi, Joint Secretary of the Diocesan Youth Commission, energised the atmosphere of the event by leading the youth in interactive activities. Ms. Vileena Gonsalves, Regional Youth Coordinator for Karnataka, and Mr. Romario J. W. further enlivened the gathering with engaging games and action songs. A fellowship meal strengthened bonds of friendship and deepened the sense of communion among the youth.

Expressing his vision for young people, His Grace Abp. Dr. Bernard Moras, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Mysore, stated, “I desire to see the young people of our Diocese grow as strong witnesses of Christ—rooted in faith, committed to family values, and passionate about protecting creation.”

Despite heavy rains, 155 youth from the Madikeri and Virajpet deaneries participated in the event with great enthusiasm. The organisers thanked all the parish priests in the two deaneries and the parents for encouraging and sending their youth to take part in this formative event.

Fr. Avinash H. N., Parish Priest of Our Lady of Victories Church, Somwarpet, along with the parish youth, ensured excellent arrangements, warm hospitality, and refreshments for the event. Their dedication and joyful service created a welcoming atmosphere for all participants.

The day concluded with a prayer of dedication and a vote of thanks, leaving participants renewed in faith, strengthened in fellowship, and filled with joy.

The entire programme was coordinated by Fr. Arul Selvakumar, Diocesan Commission Coordinator.
