GOA, October 21, 2026: Forty priests and seminarians from across India gathered at the Joseph Vaz Retreat Centre in Goa from October 12 to 15 for the annual retreat of the Priests’ Branch of the Focolare Movement, focusing on spiritual renewal, priestly fraternity and a deeper commitment to Christ’s love and unity.
Held under the theme “Set the Earth on Fire” (Luke 12:49), the retreat drew on the spirituality of communion inspired by Servant of God Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement, encouraging participants to integrate the Gospel of love into their ministries and relationships.
The retreat opened with a video message from Archbishop Francis Kalist of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, who shared how the spirituality of communion had shaped his priestly life and ministry.
Fr Thomas Kulangara spoke on “The Priesthood of Jesus and the Ministerial Priesthood”, while Fr Stephen Jayard reflected on Magnifica Humanitas and the spirituality of the Focolare Movement.
Zone directors of the movement explored the charisms of St Francis of Assisi and Chiara Lubich through the theme of self-emptying, as well as the concepts of royal and Marian priesthood.
Bishop Agnelo Pinheiro of Sindhudurg addressed the importance of interreligious dialogue, while Auxiliary Bishop Simiao Fernandes of Goa and Daman spoke on “Carrying the Torch of Fire”, drawing inspiration from St Teresa of Ávila.
An interaction with the local Focolare community provided an opportunity to reflect on the practical expression of Gospel love and unity. Participants also meditated on “Jesus Forsaken”, a central theme of the Focolare spirituality, recognising Christ’s presence in the challenges, sacrifices and struggles of priestly life.
The retreat concluded with visits to the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the seminaries at Pilar and Rachol.
The gathering sought to strengthen priestly fraternity and renew participants’ spiritual commitment, encouraging them to carry Christ’s love into their pastoral responsibilities and witness to unity in the Church and society.
