How One Woman Found Comfort in the Rosary During Five Weeks in Hospital

October 21, 2026: Every morning at 10 a.m., as she lay recovering in a hospital bed, one woman joined her friend in praying the Rosary. For five weeks, this simple daily ritual accompanied Tammy Peterson through a difficult period of illness, becoming an important part of her journey towards faith.

Peterson, the wife of Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2019. Following surgery, she developed serious complications that required an extended hospital stay. During this difficult time, her Catholic friend Queenie Yu introduced her to the Rosary, opening a new chapter in her spiritual journey.

A Friend Introduces Her to the Rosary

During Peterson’s hospitalisation, Yu visited her with Rosaries blessed by the Pope and taught her how to pray the devotion. Their visits soon became a daily routine, as they prayed together every morning throughout the five weeks.

The time they spent together went beyond reciting prayers. Peterson shared her life story and offered intentions for her family and loved ones, while Yu accompanied her through the mysteries of the Rosary.

Recalling the experience in an interview with the National Catholic Register, Peterson described it as a beautiful period in her life.

“I didn't worry; I just prayed, and it filled my life,” she said.

Finding Comfort Through Prayer

Peterson endured considerable discomfort during her hospitalisation. The complications following surgery made her recovery difficult, and some nights she struggled to sleep because of the pain.

During those nights, she would recite the Lord’s Prayer when she woke up and found it difficult to return to sleep. Prayer became a regular part of her days and nights, offering her a way to turn towards God amid uncertainty.

The morning Rosary also gave her time to reflect on her life and entrust her concerns to God. The companionship of Yu made the experience particularly meaningful, as the two shared prayer and conversation during a challenging period.

For Peterson, the practice continued beyond her hospital stay. Reflecting on its significance, she explained that the morning Rosary remained central to her daily life.

“The morning Rosary with intention remains the most important thing for me,” she said. “It centers me, it grounds me, it puts me on my knees, so I am ready for whatever God has in store for me every day.”

A Journey Towards the Catholic Faith

Peterson’s experience of illness and prayer became an important part of her journey towards Catholicism. Raised in a Protestant tradition, she had stopped attending church during her adolescence. Her friendship with Yu and their daily Rosary helped her explore the Catholic faith more deeply.

She entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil in 2024, receiving the sacraments of initiation.

Her testimony highlights the role prayer and personal accompaniment can play during difficult moments. Yu’s daily visits offered Peterson not only an introduction to the Rosary but also the companionship of someone willing to pray and listen.

For Peterson, what began as a daily prayer in a hospital room became a lasting spiritual practice. Her experience offers a reminder that prayer does not remove every difficulty, but can help the faithful turn towards God amid suffering and uncertainty.
