Focolare General Assembly Opens Amid Global Tensions, Renews Call to Unity and Peace

March 23, 2026: The 2026 General Assembly of the Focolare Movement commenced against the backdrop of renewed conflict in the Middle East, prompting participants to reflect deeply on their mission of fostering unity in a fractured world.

The gathering brought together 320 delegates from across the globe, including four representatives from India, embodying the Movement’s international character and its commitment to fraternity across religions, cultures, ethnicities, and generations. Rooted in the charism of unity entrusted to Chiara Lubich, the Assembly focused on responding to contemporary challenges such as polarization, technological change, and the many forms of poverty.

Over the course of twenty days, participants engaged in a structured process of silence, prayer, and discernment. Using the “conversation in the Spirit” method, delegates worked in 30 multilingual groups, reflecting on themes that had emerged from consultations across the Movement worldwide. The Assembly was marked not only by formal sessions and expert inputs, but also by moments of informal exchange that fostered a strong sense of community and shared purpose.

A key outcome of the Assembly was the discernment of priorities for the next five years, alongside the election of a new leadership team, including the President, Co-President, and General Councillors, ensuring broad international representation at the Movement’s center.

The Assembly concluded with a private audience with Pope Leo XIV on March 21, 2026. The Holy Father’s warm and attentive presence left a deep impression on participants. In a gesture reflecting his pastoral sensitivity, he greeted the group with a light remark, mindful of the time of day, before offering words of encouragement and guidance.

In his address, the Pope urged members of the Movement to deepen their commitment to living and promoting unity, and to become authentic instruments of peace in a world marked by violence and division. His message closely echoed the priorities that had emerged during the Assembly deliberations.

The encounter with the Holy Father was marked by a festive and hopeful atmosphere, both before and after the audience. Delegates departed with renewed resolve to integrate his guidance into their future initiatives and to continue serving the Church and humanity through the charism of unity.

Cherylanne Menezes, Co-Delegate for the Indian Subcontinent and the Philippines, described the Assembly as a profound spiritual and communal experience, inspiring participants to carry forward the Movement’s mission with renewed dedication.
