Philippines, November 9, 2025: As Typhoon Kalmaegi battered the central Philippines, claiming at least 142 lives and leaving 127 missing, communities gathered along the shores—rosaries in hand—praying for mercy and protection. The storm, which triggered severe flooding and widespread destruction, has been identified by EM-DAT as the deadliest typhoon in the world in 2025.
Archbishop Alberto S. Uy of Cebu has appealed to the faithful to open their homes, churches, and institutions to those left homeless. “Disasters like this,” he said, “reflect what we have done, or failed to do, for our common home.”
The devastation comes just weeks after an earthquake struck Cebu, killing over 70 people, displacing 20,000, and damaging historic churches and facilities. In response, the local Church launched the “Give Hope” emergency relief initiative to aid victims — a mission now reinvigorated in the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi and the earlier Typhoon Tino.
Despite the grief and destruction, scenes of unity and faith abound. On battered coastlines, as winds howled and waters rose, Filipinos stood together — a people of faith turning tragedy into a testament of hope.
