On 9th June, Catholics across the world will observe the liturgical Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoured as the Mother of the Church. Instituted by Pope Francis in 2018, the feast is celebrated annually on the Monday following Pentecost—a fitting placement, as Pentecost is widely regarded as the birthday of the Church.
Mary’s profound role in the life and growth of the Church is central to this celebration. Having faithfully accompanied Jesus throughout His earthly ministry, Mary remained present with the Apostles after the Resurrection. Her presence served as a source of strength and comfort as the early Church took root amidst trials, persecution, and suffering. Her nurturing and maternal support is seen as indispensable to the Church’s mission and development.
While the formal establishment of this feast may seem recent, its foundations lie deep within Church tradition and the writings of the early Church Fathers. During the Second Vatican Council, a debate arose on whether Mary’s role should be addressed in a separate document or integrated into the Church’s Dogmatic Constitution, Lumen Gentium. Some participants expressed concern that highlighting Marian devotion might alienate Protestant communities. However, Pope Paul VI firmly advocated for Mary’s role in salvation history to be embedded within the core teachings of the Church. As a result, the final chapter of Lumen Gentium offers a profound reflection on Mary’s presence in the mystery of the Church.
Mary is not only to be venerated but also recognised as the first pilgrim disciple. Her unwavering faith and obedience exemplify the path of Christian discipleship. Today, she continues to serve as a model for all believers and intercedes for the faithful. Like a mother, she accompanies and encourages the Church in its earthly journey.
As the Church marks this special feast, the faithful are invited to renew their devotion to Mary—not only as an object of prayer, but as a guiding presence who walks with the Church in hope and love.
