Located in the serene village of Aldona in North Goa, St. Bridget's Institute of Home Science is a Caritas Goa project that was started in 1989 with a vision to uplift women from all walks of life. The institute provides women with opportunities for education and skill development to assist them in realizing their full potential. By equipping them with knowledge and practical skills, it helps women become self-reliant and self-employed.
The inception of St. Bridget’s was made possible by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Natvidade Soares and their family, who, in memory of their late daughter Stella, donated their home and property in Aldona to make this dream a reality.
Early Years
From its inception until 1992, the institute was under the capable leadership of Mrs. Suzan D’Souza. In 1992, the Sisters of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary took over its management. Shortly after taking over, they started offering a one-year diploma program in Home Science at the institute. Along with this, various short-term and crash courses were offered in collaboration with the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) and the Government of India, focusing on skill development in areas such as nutrition. This allowed students to acquire additional qualifications for self-employment.
In 2006, in response to the increasing number of elderly and infirm individuals requiring specialized care, Caritas Goa introduced the Home Nursing course at St. Bridget’s Institute to address the gap in professional caregiving for seniors. This one-year program aims to train individuals, both male and female, in providing essential care to the elderly and sick within their own homes.
Course Details
The Home Nursing program at St. Bridget’s is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective care for aged and sick individuals in their own environments. It emphasizes a holistic approach to health, recognizing the relationship between a person’s physical, social, and emotional environment. The course curriculum includes theoretical knowledge and practical training, ensuring students are well-prepared to meet the growing demand for home-based care. The program includes a contract service period during which students are sent to various institutions, including aged homes, government hospitals, and private homes, to gain hands-on work experience.
In addition to its academic offerings, St. Bridget’s provides accommodation for its students, including those from outside the local area, ensuring that young women have a safe and supportive environment to pursue their studies.
Through its unwavering commitment to education and community service, St. Bridget's Institute of Home Science continues to play a pivotal role in equipping women with the skills they need to make a meaningful difference in their lives and in the lives of others, particularly the elderly and those in need of compassionate care.
