DFNEI Marks 40 years of Priestly Fraternity in North East India

DIPHU, Assam, October 7, 2026: Nearly 264 diocesan priests from 15 dioceses across North East India gathered in Diphu for the 20th Biennial Convention of the Diocesan Fraternity of North East India (DFNEI), marking 40 years of priestly fraternity, pastoral collaboration and mutual support.

The October 6-9 convention, hosted by the Diocese of Diphu, focused on the theme “Ministry and Life of Diocesan Priests” and examined the changing pastoral realities, challenges and responsibilities facing diocesan clergy in the region.

Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong, president of the North East India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC), inaugurated the gathering. Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati delivered the keynote address, urging priests to remain rooted in Christ while responding generously to the pastoral needs of their communities.

Fr. Stanislaus Chinliankhup, rector of Oriens Theological College, Shillong, reflected on “The Eucharistic Life of Diocesan Priests in the North East.” He traced the biblical understanding of covenant and sacrifice to its fulfilment in the Paschal Mystery of Christ, stressing the Eucharist as the centre and source of priestly spirituality and ministry.

Bishop Benny of Itanagar addressed the contemporary challenges confronting diocesan priests, calling for renewed fraternity, deeper spiritual commitment and a stronger missionary spirit.

The convention also provided a forum for diocesan fraternities to share pastoral experiences, initiatives and challenges. Reports from different dioceses highlighted creative responses to emerging pastoral needs across the region.

A cultural programme featuring tribal dances showcased the rich heritage of North East India and highlighted the unity that embraces the region’s cultural diversity.

Representatives of the CCBI Commission for Clergy and the national secretary of the Conference of Diocesan Priests of India (CDPI) also participated in the convention. Their presence opened discussions on strengthening collaboration, fraternity and mutual accompaniment among diocesan priests at regional and national levels.

With more than 900 diocesan priests serving across the North East, DFNEI has, over four decades, provided a platform for clergy to support one another, exchange pastoral experiences and deepen their commitment to priestly life and ministry.

The 40-year journey of DFNEI was highlighted as a significant experience for the wider Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), particularly in its efforts to promote communion, participation and missionary collaboration among diocesan clergy.

The convention also pointed to the potential for DFNEI’s experience to encourage diocesan priest fraternities in other CCBI regions, either by strengthening existing structures or developing new forms of priestly fraternity and mutual accompaniment.
