Dalit Christians Seek Justice: Madras-Mylapore Commission Launches Signature Campaign

Chennai, June 26, 2025: With a renewed call for justice and equity, the SC/ST Commission of the Archdiocese of Madras–Mylapore has launched a signature campaign urging the Tamil Nadu Government to provide a 4.6% internal reservation for Dalit Christians within the existing Backward Class (BC) quota.

Though Tamil Nadu has a strong reservation framework—26.5% for BCs (excluding Muslims) and 3.5% for BC Muslims—Christians of Scheduled Caste origin remain excluded from the Scheduled Caste category due to their faith, despite facing persistent socio-economic and educational disadvantages.

“This is not a demand for a new quota, but a fair plea for internal reallocation within the existing BC quota,” said Rev. Fr. Maria John Bosco M.L.A., Chairman of the Archdiocesan SC/ST Commission. “Until the Supreme Court grants SC status to Dalit Christians, this 4.6% internal reservation would help address their historical and ongoing marginalization.”

The collected signatures will be formally submitted to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin, urging immediate and effective policy action.

The Commission has appealed to all parishes in the Archdiocese to mobilize support through Anbiam leaders, parish councils, youth, and women’s groups. Faith communities are being urged to stand in solidarity with Dalit Christians and support this timely campaign.

Church leaders view this initiative as a crucial step toward correcting a long-standing injustice and ensuring dignity, equity, and representation for all.
