Shillong, August 16, 2025 – St. Edmund’s College marked Independence Day 2025 with a blend of vibrant patriotism and environmental awareness, setting an inspiring example of how national pride can harmonise with ecological responsibility.
The celebration commenced promptly in the morning with the flag hoisting ceremony led by Principal Br. Sunil Britto. This was followed by soulful patriotic songs, energetic dance performances, and a thought-provoking skit that captivated the audience.
A distinctive feature of this year’s event was its eco-friendly approach. The SEC Craft Club and Les Artisans Art Club ensured that all decorations were crafted exclusively from biodegradable materials. In a deliberate step towards sustainability, the campus avoided balloons and plastic flags altogether.
Reinforcing the importance of this initiative, Principal Br. Sunil Britto highlighted the dangers of balloon pollution, noting that balloons are 32 times more deadly to seabirds than hard plastics. He urged the gathering to embrace a deeper form of patriotism by not only honouring the national flag but also safeguarding the earth beneath it.
By combining cultural vibrancy with environmental consciousness, St. Edmund’s College celebrated Independence Day as both a tribute to the nation and a pledge to protect the planet.
