CDPI National Conference Call for Beacon of Hope for the Marginalised

Kottayam, 25 February 2025: The 21st National Conference of the Conference of Diocesan Priests of India (CDPI) has called upon diocesan priests to be beacons of hope for the marginalized. The conference, which began on February 25, 2025, at Vimalagiri Pastoral Centre in Kottayam, Diocese of Vijayapuram, focused on the theme "Diocesan Clergy as Beacons of Hope to the People of God—Displaced, Marginalised."


Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal, Chairman of the Vocation, Seminary, Clergy, and Religious Commission of the CCBI and Patron of CDPI, inaugurated the gathering. Addressing the 152 priests in attendance, he emphasised the need to be sources of hope for those who are displaced and marginalised.


Fr. Maria Michael Felix, Secretary of CDPI Kerala Region, welcomed the delegates, while Fr. Charles Leon, Secretary of CDPI, provided an overview of the previous national council held in 2024 in Jaipur. Fr. Roy Lazar, National President of CDPI, delivered the presidential address, and Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of CCBI, extended his felicitations.


Fr. Hilary Joseph, Financial Administrator of the Diocese of Vijayapuram, introduced the logistical arrangements for the event, and Fr. Kanuj Roy, Treasurer of CDPI, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks.


The sessions were led by Msgr. Joy Puthenvettil, Vicar General of the Diocese of Alleppey, who explored the pastoral dimensions of the theme, drawing from the scriptural passage, "I have heard their cry and seen their sufferings."


Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara and Fr. Adv. Jaison Vadassery introduced the methodology of spiritual conversation, guiding the participants through a structured process of discernment. The priests engaged in discussions within ten groups, reflecting deeply on their role in responding to the challenges of the displaced and marginalised.


As part of the conference, the delegates undertook a pilgrimage to St. Antony’s Shrine in Nagampadam, Kottayam, where they celebrated the Holy Mass. Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal was the main celebrant, with Bishop Justin Madathiparambil, Auxiliary Bishop of Vijayapuram, and Fr. Sebastian Poovathinkgal, Rector of St. Antony’s Shrine, concelebrating.


On the second day, Bishop Sebastian Thekethecheril of Vijayapuram will preside over the Holy Mass. The conference will also address various challenges faced by people across India, aiming to strengthen the mission of diocesan priests in serving the vulnerable. It will conclude on February 27, 2025.


The Conference of Diocesan Priests of India, under the guidance of the CCBI, is committed to fostering fraternity among diocesan priests, strengthening collaboration with bishops, and promoting ongoing formation through pastoral spirituality and awareness of contemporary issues.
