Panaji, Goa, 12 April 2025 :
The Commission for Canon Law and Other Legislative Texts of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CCBI) has announced a new online diploma course titled Canon Law for a Synodal Church. The course aims to empower lay people by deepening their understanding of their rights, obligations, and role in fostering a more participatory and co-responsible Church.
Designed with a strong focus on synodality, the course will centre on the laity's baptismal call to share in the Tria munera Christi—the threefold functions of Christ as priest, prophet, and king. Through this lens, participants will explore the theological and canonical foundations that shape their place in the Church’s life and mission.
The course offers a comprehensive formation in Canon Law, highlighting the role of lay faithful as missionary disciples in building a Synodal Church. Topics will include magisterial teachings on lay participation, Church structures, stable lay ministries, and key documents of the CCBI.
Under the guidance of Dr. Antonysamy Savarimuthu, the course will be conducted by Prof. Merlin Rengith Ambrose, Executive Secretary of the Canon Law Commission. It will run from 7 June 2025 to 24 January 2026, held every Saturday from 4 to 6 pm via Zoom.
For more information, interested participants may contact Fr. Duming at 9309110391 or Fr. Merlin Rengith Ambrose at 9884668927, or email: shantisadangoa@gmail.com.
This initiative offers a timely opportunity for lay people to engage meaningfully in the life of the Church through informed and active participation.
