CCBI Calls for Week of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in the Middle East

New Delhi, March 3, 2026: In response to the escalating violence and instability in the Middle East, the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, has called on the faithful of the Latin Catholic Church in India to unite in prayer for peace.

In a circular addressed to archbishops, bishops, priests, deacons, religious, catechists and lay faithful, Cardinal Ferrão urged the Church across the country to observe Sunday, March 8, 2026, as a Day of Prayer for Peace, with special intentions offered during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

Expressing deep concern over the growing hostilities, particularly involving Iran and neighbouring countries, the Cardinal highlighted the immense suffering caused by war and instability, noting that such conflicts deeply wound the human family.

He also drew attention to the large number of Indians living and working in the Middle East, many of whom support their families back home and contribute significantly to both the Church and the nation. “In this hour of uncertainty, we commend them in a special way to the Lord’s protection,” the message said, urging prayers for their safety, security and well-being.

As part of the initiative, the faithful have been encouraged to pray the Holy Rosary each day from March 8 to March 14 for peace, invoking the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, for reconciliation, dialogue and a just resolution to the tensions.

Cardinal Ferrão has also invited Catholics to observe a day of fasting and prayer on Friday, March 13, offering their sacrifice for world peace and for the safety of all those affected by violence and conflict.

During Masses on March 8, parishes have been asked to include special intentions in the Prayer of the Faithful, seeking the cessation of hostilities, protection of innocent lives and wisdom and restraint among world leaders.

The appeal, issued from the CCBI General Secretariat in New Delhi on March 3, calls on the faithful to entrust the troubled situation to God’s mercy. The Cardinal expressed hope that through collective prayer, penance and solidarity, hearts may be converted, hostilities may cease and peace may prevail.
