CBCI Labour Office Mourns Seafarers Killed in Cargo Ship Attacks, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

New Delhi, July 21, 2026: The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) Office for Labour and Apostleship of the Sea has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives following recent attacks on cargo ships off the coast of Ukraine and in the Strait of Hormuz, while urging an immediate ceasefire to safeguard seafarers.

According to the office, four Indian nationals lost their lives and another remains in critical condition following an attack near Ukraine. It also noted that at least seven Indian sailors were killed and several others injured in attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Expressing heartfelt condolences, the CBCI Office for Labour and Apostleship of the Sea assured prayers and solidarity with the bereaved families. It described the deaths of seafarers serving far from home as a painful reminder of the dangers faced daily by those who keep global supply chains moving.

The office said the incidents highlight the growing risks faced by civilian seafarers when merchant ships become caught in geopolitical conflicts. It stressed that seafarers are civilian workers and should never become collateral damage in international disputes.

Calling for urgent action, the CBCI Office for Labour and Apostleship of the Sea appealed to the leaders of nations involved in the conflicts to work towards an immediate ceasefire. It also urged the international community and maritime regulatory authorities to take decisive measures to ensure the safety, security and free passage of all seafaring vessels operating in conflict zones.

The office concluded by offering prayers for the souls of those who died, the speedy recovery of the injured crew members, and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.
