New Delhi, 26 February 2026: The racial abuse and harassment of girls from Northeast India in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar have drawn strong condemnation from Church leadership in the country, with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) describing the incident as shameful and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CBCI said that such repeated incidents occurring in different parts of the country are a blot on India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. The bishops expressed deep concern over the recurring nature of racial discrimination faced by individuals from the Northeast.
The Conference appreciated the prompt action taken by the Delhi Police in addressing the matter. At the same time, it urged the Union Government and all State Governments to take concrete steps to sensitise the general public about the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of Northeast India, and to ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens, particularly those from the region.
Reaffirming its stand, the CBCI stated that it firmly opposes all forms of discrimination and harassment. It underscored that every citizen has the right to live with dignity and respect, irrespective of origin or background.
The Conference also called upon citizens across the country to promote unity, understanding, and respect for diversity, and to stand together against such shameful acts.
