Catechism Teachers’ Training Programme Strengthens Faith Formation in Belgaum, Karnataka

Belgaum, Karnataka, September 17, 2025: The Commission for Faith Formation and Bible Apostolate of the Diocese of Belgaum recently organised a Catechism Teachers’ Training Programme at St. Anthony’s Church, Camp, Belgaum.

The programme opened with the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Belgaum. In his homily, Bishop Derek reflected on the lives of two newly canonised saints, St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati—both young people inspired by the Holy Spirit. He highlighted how St. Carlo Acutis, despite his youth, committed himself to teaching catechism to children, underscoring the vital role of catechetical instruction in the Church’s mission.

Following the Eucharist, sessions commenced with talks and reflections designed for catechism teachers. Drawing on biblical themes such as the Parable of the Sower, speakers encouraged participants to sow the Word of God with patience, commitment, and faith.

The programme was enriched by resource persons Fr. Bonaventure Rodrigues, Director of KROSS (Karnataka Regional Organisation for Social Service), and Mrs. Lydia Peter. They offered practical methods and spiritual encouragement to help catechists carry out their mission with renewed vigour.

The seminar was coordinated by the Commission Secretaries, Fr. Buddini and Fr. Prashanth Kumar (Joint Secretary). Their careful planning ensured the event ran smoothly and effectively.

In a gesture of recognition and encouragement, the seminar concluded with the handing over of certificates to all catechism teachers who attended the training. This final moment affirmed their dedication and strengthened their sense of commitment to the ministry of faith formation.

The day’s programme not only deepened the biblical knowledge of catechists but also rekindled their enthusiasm for nurturing the faith of children and young people in the Diocese. With renewed inspiration, the teachers returned to their parishes better equipped to carry forward the Church’s mission of evangelisation through catechesis.

Fr. Alwin Christopher George
