Cardinal Koovakad Calls Religion a ‘Wellspring of Healing and Unity’ at Mumbai Inter-faith Meet

Mumbai, October 6, 2025 - In a powerful address at an inter-faith gathering in Mumbai, Cardinal George Koovakad emphasised that religion can be a “wellspring of healing and reconciliation” in a world torn apart by conflict and division. Speaking at St. Andrew’s College, Bandra, on October 4, Cardinal Koovakad urged leaders and followers of different faith traditions to become “pilgrims of hope” who bring light to the poor, suffering, and marginalized.

The Cardinal’s message was delivered during the inter-faith event “Pilgrims of Hope – Religions Journeying for Peace,” organised by the Inter-religious Dialogue Commission of the Archdiocese of Bombay and the College’s Inter-religious Cell. The event brought together leaders, scholars, and peace advocates from various faith traditions to promote unity and dialogue among diverse communities.

Cardinal Koovakad’s address highlighted the importance of inter-religious dialogue in fostering fraternity, unity, and solidarity. Referring to St. Francis of Assisi as a “pioneer of inter-religious dialogue,” Cardinal Koovakad marked the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, praising its role in fostering fraternity, unity, and solidarity. Quoting Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, he emphasised faith as a source of peace and love, and urged all to become “pilgrims of hope” who bring light to the poor, suffering, and marginalised. Citing Pope Leo XIV, he affirmed that religion remains a “wellspring of healing and reconciliation” and called inter-religious dialogue “a necessary condition for peace.”

The event featured an intimate interaction among leaders from multiple religious traditions, including Archbishop John Rodrigues, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Mar Thomas Elavanal MCBS, Swami Dayadhipananda of Ramakrishna Mission, and Dr. Surinder Kaur representing the Sikh community, among others.

The programme featured a rich cultural segment, including a skit on the encounter between Saint Francis of Assisi and Sultan Malek Al-Kamil, celebrating his message of peace and humility. Other performances showcased the diversity of communities, with music, dance, and theatre reflecting themes of love, unity, and harmony. A video presentation highlighted the Archdiocese’s inter-religious dialogue course (BIRD) and its positive societal impact. Participants expressed inspiration to carry forward the message of unity, and organisers described the event as a milestone that strengthened Mumbai’s enduring spirit of pluralism.
