Delhi, Nov 10, 2025: At least thirteen people have been confirmed dead after a car exploded near the historic Red Fort in Delhi, police have said.
The incident occurred around 6:52 pm (IST) when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light and then exploded, according to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. The cause of the blast is still under investigation.
Thousands of tourists visit the 17th-century Red Fort every day, which stands just a few metres from one of Delhi’s busiest trading hubs.
Reports of an explosion began surfacing shortly before 7:30 pm, and verified videos shared on social media show a car engulfed in flames and at least one body lying on the ground along Netaji Subhash Marg, a major road near the fort.
Footage reviewed by the BBC confirms that three of the videos were taken at the junction of Chandni Chowk Road, directly in front of the Red Fort’s main gates. Despite the darkness, the area appeared crowded, with many people present, including commuters from the nearby metro station.
A fourth video, recorded after firefighters extinguished the flames, shows several burnt vehicles and reveals how close the blast occurred to a police post near the fort. Another clip shows a body lying about 25 metres (80 feet) from the explosion site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences “to those who have lost their loved ones” and said he is reviewing the situation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital later in the evening to meet those injured in the blast. He said authorities were “not ruling out any possibility” and that multiple agencies are investigating the cause of the explosion.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, saying they had “never heard anything” like the explosion before, as people “ran in all directions” after the blast.
Police have sealed off the area, and forensic and anti-terror units are working jointly to determine what triggered the explosion.
