Ballari, Karnataka, March 10, 2026: A strong appeal to acknowledge the dignity, contributions and leadership of women marked the International Women’s Day celebration held at St Antony’s Pastoral Center in the Diocese of Bellary. Women from various parishes across Ballari and neighbouring areas gathered in large numbers, reflecting their growing participation in the life and mission of the Church and society.
The programme featured an interactive session led by Leslie Arousa, Secretary of the Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishops’ Council Family Commission. Drawing from personal experiences, he shared practical insights on building healthy and meaningful family relationships. Emphasising the central role of women within the family, he noted that women serve as the heart of family life and are entrusted with nurturing faith and strengthening bonds within families, neighbourhoods and parish communities.
Addressing the gathering, Bishop Henry D'Souza highlighted the deeper significance of International Women’s Day. “International Women’s Day reminds us to recognise the equal dignity of men and women,” he said, urging communities to actively promote the spiritual, social and economic empowerment of women. He also encouraged Church institutions and women’s organisations to provide opportunities for women to assume leadership and decision-making roles within ecclesial and social structures.
The event was also attended by Gadeppa, Mayor of the Ballari City Corporation. In his address, he remarked that Women’s Day should not be confined to March 8 alone but celebrated every day. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of Christian women religious in the fields of education and healthcare, recognising their role in the nation’s development.
During the programme, Sheela Das presented the annual report of the diocesan Women’s Commission for 2025–26, outlining the initiatives undertaken to empower women and strengthen family life within the diocese.
The celebration was organised under the leadership of Josphine and Sr Johncy, with the support of commission members and volunteers.
On the occasion, four women educators—Latika, Evalina, Margret and Sr Sagaya—were honoured for their outstanding teaching performance at the taluk level, recognising their dedicated service in the field of education.
Cultural performances presented by women from different parish units added colour and vibrancy to the gathering, highlighting their creativity and strengthening bonds of unity among participants.
In addition to the central programme in Ballari, several parishes across the Diocese of Bellary organised meaningful observances of International Women’s Day, reaffirming the Church’s commitment to promoting the dignity and leadership of women in society.
