BJP Leader's Remarks on Jesuits Spark Controversy, Draw Church Response

PATHANAMTHITTA, July 29, 2026: Remarks by BJP State Vice-President Dr. K. S. Radhakrishnan concerning the Society of Jesus and Malayali Jesuit priest Fr. M. K. George, in the context of the student protests in Delhi, have triggered controversy and drawn a strong response from Church circles.

Speaking to an online media outlet, Radhakrishnan alleged that certain Christian organisations had links with international forces working against India and claimed that the Society of Jesus was part of an international Christianisation agenda. He also referred to Fr. M. K. George in his remarks.

Fr. M. K. George, South Asia Regional Assistant of the Society of Jesus, had written an article in a Christian publication in the context of the Delhi student protests, calling on young people to participate in democratic protests. Church circles said the article appeared to have prompted Radhakrishnan's subsequent remarks.

The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) Vigilance Commission criticised the description of Christian missionaries working among poor and tribal communities as "Naxal sympathisers." The Commission said such allegations pave the way for social division and religious hatred.

Jesuit spokesperson Fr. Binoy Pichalakkatt also responded to the controversy, pointing out that Radhakrishnan had taught at Loyola College, Thiruvananthapuram, during the period when Fr. M. K. George was serving as its Principal. Fr. Binoy criticised Radhakrishnan's present position, saying it was at odds with the cordial relationship the two had shared during that period.

The Society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, is one of the largest religious orders in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis was a member of the Society of Jesus.

In India, the Society of Jesus has an active presence in the fields of education and social service, including numerous universities and colleges.
