Eluru, December 24 — A call for peace, unity and service marked the pre-Christmas celebrations held at the Eluru Collectorate premises, organised by the District Minority Welfare Department.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Bishop Jayarao Polimera of the Diocese of Eluru said that Jesus Christ, though the Son of God, chose to be born as an ordinary human being in a cattle shed to proclaim the truth of life to all humanity. He described Christmas as a festival for the whole world and said Christianity stands for communion with people rather than mere rules or doctrines.
Reflecting on the Nativity, Bishop Polimera said Christ was born to enlighten humanity, affirm God’s presence and give hope to the weary and marginalised. He noted that Jesus was not welcomed into homes and was therefore born in a cattle shed, a moment that brought fear to some and courage to others. According to him, the birth of Christ continues to inspire truth, equality and courage in society.
Quoting Pope Francis, the Bishop said Christianity is not a set of rules or secret doctrines but a personal union with people. He urged all communities to work together for national integrity and world peace, guided by service and love. He concluded by extending Christmas greetings on the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The programme was attended by Eluru District Joint Collector K. Vetri Selvi, District Parish Chairperson Ganta Padmasri, District Revenue Officer Visweswara Rao, Eluru RDO Achuta Ambarish, Muslim religious leader Raja Ahmed, and representatives from Christian religious groups and the district administration.
